Chip that plays both Blu-Ray and HD DVD announced

Broadcom Corporation, which develops wired and wireless communications semiconductors has announced the first audio/video decoder chip, the BCM7411D, that supports both Blu-Ray and HD DVD optical disc formats.

The BCM7411D HD A/V decoder chip supports H.264,VC-1, AVC. The chip will also support MPEG-2 for backward compatibility for current DVD video titles and new HD DVD titles published in MPEG-2 format.

This chip will enable manufacturers build players that play both HD content and the present DVD's as well.

According to the Broadcom website,
" The BCM7411D is now shipping in volume quantities with pricing available upon request."
