How to Export Firefox Live bookmarks to Google Reader

No matter what, Firefox's live bookmarks feature is still one of the best ways to read stuff from your favourite sites. However, it is the best only when the number of subscribed sites is at a fairly manageable level. More the sites, more is the clutter.

A simple solution is to export these live bookmarks into a feed reader like Google Reader. The advantage with Google Reader is the ability to access these live bookmark feeds from anywhere (You can use addons to access Firefox bookmarks from any machine, but why install more addons and slow up Firefox). Besides this, you also don't need to backup your bookmarks from time to time.

How to do it?

1. First of all, you need to convert Firefox live bookmarks into an OPML format. So download and install OPML Support addon for Firefox before proceeding.
Restart Firefox after installation.

2. In Firefox, go to Bookmarks >> Show All Bookmarks.. to open the Bookmarks Manager.
Now in Bookmarks Manager, go to Opml Support >> Export OPML..
The OPML export windows appears.

3. Using this OPML window, we can choose to export Bookmarks, Livemarks or both. We just want to export the Live bookmarks, so select Only Live Bookmarks (Feeds). Leave rest of the settings to their default values.
Click Ok and save the opml file in your computer.

4. After getting the opml file, login to the Google Reader account and click on Settings >> Export/Import. Now upload the opml file which you saved in your computer.

That's it folks! All your Firefox live bookmark feeds will now be available in Google Reader. Hope you find this useful.

I can't export opml file!?
I click on export and it opens new window with text "processing livemarks" or something like that and stays like that for hours.
@Anon - You have to install OPML Support addon for Firefox. This gives you the option to export to OPML..

Sorry, but this is old information. The export tool in not under file in Firefox 4.0. It is controlled from the bookmarks menu under "show all bookmarks". Since your post is coming up in searches toward the top, you may want to revise it.
